2027 will be a turning point for wood construction: it will be the year when the first buildings of Stockholm Wood City are completed. This concept was made by the Swedish studio Atrium Ljunberg and will start to be projected in 2025 over 25 hectares within the Sickla district, south of Stockholm, and by that date, it will be the largest solid wood urban center.

 

Offices, housing, shops, and leisure spaces

This neighborhood will demonstrate that it is possible to propose different types of wooden structures, as advocated by the MASS Madera network, which accounts for the versatility of this material as a structural element, as well as its value for the interior design of any habitat. It also follows the sustainable building precepts defended by the New European Bauhaus, which we have already discussed in this article.

Stockholm Wood City will house seven thousand new offices and two thousand homes, in addition to shops and leisure spaces. In fact, Sickla is the third premier commercial place in Sweden.

 

Leaving a mark, but not a carbon one

From Atrium Ljunberg, they declare the social and environmental benefits that a wood product provides: “improved air quality, stress reduction, increased productivity, and carbon dioxide storage.”

Another relevant aspect of the project is the design of transportation, based on having basic daily necessities within a 5-minute walk, and the use of solar panels and underground energy storage for heating and cooling, based on a self-sufficiency electrical model.

If we continue to bet on this type of solution and manage to make 90% of homes in wood by the year 2100, we will reduce carbon emissions by 106 gigatons – the planet currently emits about 40 gigatons per year – according to a study from the scientific journal Nature.
