The kitchen regains its central role in 2024, largely thanks to EuroCucina, the biennial event that helped us materialize all the changes that had been simmering slowly, which we previewed as design keys in this post. Now, we offer a thoughtful reflection on the conceptualization and integration of this space with the rest of the home.
Openness and cohesion through color
Homes are more fluid, and the boundaries between rooms are blurring, so the goal is total cohesion of the kitchen, not just with the living room, but also with the hallway, bathroom, or bedroom, making it the social hub of the house. You can achieve this, as we suggested in this post, by connecting it through the materials and hues used in the furnishings.
Dark tones will be your great allies. Specifically, these finishes, Nogal Fausto and Rojo Tassili, facilitate visual harmony. The surfaces inspired by elegant mottled walnuts bring sophistication and work very well in large spaces such as open kitchens. Also, don’t overlook this finish, Trinidad Black.
Smart technology also plays a crucial role in these open layouts, with appliances that integrate into the decor and are controlled via mobile devices or voice assistants. This not only improves functionality but also maintains a clean and coherent aesthetic.
Outdoor kitchens
The rise of in&out environments also involves cooking areas. The development of weather-resistant products, like Infinite Tricoya Tex, makes it possible to envision a space for enjoying the outdoors during social gatherings.
The furniture designed for this outdoor setting often features multifunctional characteristics, such as extendable tables or hidden seats, to adapt to various types of gatherings.
Nothing to hide: interiors on display
Another major shift is from hiding to displaying interiors. We give more prominence to what lies beyond the fronts, either through how we organize what we store or by adding value to what’s inside, through visible interiors, visible modules, and display cabinets, other major protagonists of the new kitchen concept. We will see handmade papers, microstones, or bold monochromes, contrasting with the exterior.
To simplify the renovation of the space, organizational systems combine practicality and creativity with solutions that easily allow for rearranging displayed items.
Beyond white and total look
We move away from white and opt for color blocks combined with stones to create visual harmony, using the same tone for different materials. The total look drives coordination among the different furniture elements that make up the design.
Green and talc pink set the trend, as captured in the Pinterest predictions report, which shows a 160% increase in searches for “eccentric kitchen,” a 55% increase for “green kitchen paint,” and a 40% increase for “retro pink kitchens.”
Besides color, textures, fluting, and patterns are gaining prominence, with tiles, laminates, and coverings that add depth and character to the space. Any material can be exploited for all its tactile properties.
