Hybrid design: hand in hand with artificial intelligence

Hybrid design, in which we work hand in hand with artificial intelligence to optimize phases of the process, is redefining the creative landscape by integrating the digital and the physical in novel and accessible ways. We highlight three examples of real cases to inspire you.

Promptac: a kit to mold AI

Promptac is an innovative kit developed by Zhaodi Feng that allows modifying pieces generated by AI using manual gestures and real-world materials, creating a more natural and intuitive interaction with technology. Promptac’s tools, equipped with sensors that translate physical gestures into digital changes, simulate the clay molding experience.

A sofa in an envelope

Space10, which was IKEA’s external creative lab until 2023, relied on AI to materialize the “foldable sofa“. This piece of furniture not only adapts its shape to maximize comfort and space usage but also integrates AI as a creative collaborator in the design process. The AI analyzed data on ergonomics and style preferences to propose aesthetically pleasing and functionally superior models.

From a crumpled paper to a building

Crumpled papers will never go to the wastebasket again thanks to LookX. This AI platform transforms images of crumpled paper into architectural models. This method enables exploring complex shapes and structures from simple sheets. The AI interprets the textures and folds to generate 3D models with the style we desire.

These examples demonstrate how hybrid design with AI opens new, more inclusive, and accessible possibilities. The continuous evolution of AI is destined to transform entire industries, from fashion and furniture to architecture and engineering, offering new tools that foster collaboration, experimentation, and innovation, paving the way for future creative explorations that previously seemed impossible.
